What Is a Drone?
Drones, sometimes called Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), carry out tasks from mundane to ultra-dangerous. These robot-like aircraft can find rescuing avalanche victims and dropping off groceries at your doorstep — and almost everywhere in between.
Karem is considered the founding father of UAV (drone) technology. From an early age, he had a desire for aeronautics, and at 14, he started building model aircraft.
UAVs were most regularly associated with the military. They initially use for anti-aircraft target practice, intelligence assembly, and, more controversially, as weapons platforms. They are now also used in a range of civilian roles, including the following:
To search and Rescue:
- Traffic monitoring
- Firefighting
- Agriculture
- Videography
- Surveillance
- Weather Monitoring
- Personal use
- Drone-based photography
- Delivery services
Types of Drones
Drones come in various types, each tailored to the unique demands of different industries. For instance, some people require lightweight drones to hold a camera for photography, while others need robust drones to transport heavy medical supplies. As a result, companies produce drones in four main types — single-rotor helicopters, multi-rotor, fixed-wing, and fixed-wing hybrid VTOL.
The Most Common Types of Drones are:
- Single-Rotor Helicopter Drones
- Multi-Rotor Drones
- Fixed-Wing Drones
- Fixed-Wing Hybrid VTOL Drones
How do Drones Work?
Drones have two primary functions: Flight mode and Navigation.
It must have a power source, such as a battery or fuel, to fly. Drones also have rotors, propellers, and a frame. The frame of a drone is typically made of a lightweight composite material to reduce weight and increase maneuverability.
Drones require a controller, which lets the operator use remote controls to launch, navigate and land the aircraft. Controllers communicate with the drone using radio waves, such as Wi-Fi.
